Veils Length and Color
If I am wearing a long formal ivory wedding dress with a train, is there a rule as to how long should my veil be? Also, does the veil need to exactly match the color of my dress?
Confused about how long your wedding veil should be? Depending on the length, wedding veil names can be somewhat confusing, so here are some guidelines that may be helpful.
Short veils like shoulder length and elbow length wedding veils can be more casual and fun. A Shoulder Length wedding veil is usually around 21” - 24” long and falls to the shoulder. An Elbow Length wedding veil is about 28” – 30” long and falls around the elbow.
Veils on combs typically come in 3 standard widths: 54”, 72” and 108”. The wider the veil, the more volume it will have at the top, where it attaches to the comb. Narrower veils will fall almost flat, depending on the cut of the veil and the width of the comb. A wider comb (5”, for example) will help give the veil a flatter appearance, while a smaller comb (such as 3”) will give the veil more height and “pouf”.
When it comes to veils on combs, what typically sets them apart is the embellishment. The selection of edges is endless, ranging from a cut edge with no embellishment to a heavily beaded edge. In-between, the possibilities may include a serge edge, beading, pearls, rhinestones, crystals, satin ribbon, lace, and any combination of these. Pearls, crystals, beads and rhinestones are not limited to the veil edge. These embellishments can be scattered throughout the entire veil. Be sure to select a wedding veil that complements your dress and reflects your personal style.
Veils on combs may have one or two tiers. The simplest cut is a single tier oval cut. This means that the wedding veil is cut in an oval shape and there is one layer of veiling. A second tier is typically the same shape, but usually slightly shorter. It can be used as a blusher, which is worn over the bride’s face during the marriage ceremony, then flipped to the back. Blusher length can be slightly shorter than the first tier or it can be significantly shorter. You can also have the same embellishment on both tiers or you can keep your veil blusher simple.
